Dales voluntary groups lose £80,000-plus to foot and mouth

With just one new case in the UK yesterday - again in Cumbria - it is revealed today that voluntary organisations in Craven have lost at least £80,000 because of the foot and mouth crisis.

This figure - which could in fact be much higher - was the result of a survey by the Dales Recovery Appeal, which is working to raise £1 million to help the area overcome the crisis.

Some groups have lost thousands because of the cancellation of their main fund-raising events of the year, like village shows or sports meetings. Others are a few hundreds pounds down.

In the words of DRA Chairman John Sheard, "These may seem smallish amounts but to some small organisations, it is virtually their entire budget for the year.

"In terms of the contribution these organisations make to enhancing the social lives of small Dales communities, it is a devastating blow. Fortunately, we shall soon be in a position to examine applications for grants to help them overcome some of their losses."

The fund has already passed the £500,000 mark in just nine weeks, thanks in part to matching funding from the Countryside Agency, which has agreed to give £1 for every £1 donated by private individuals before September 30, giving donors the chance to double their money.

But there have been major efforts of support from small donors too. In Skipton, groups of school children working for Bold Venture have collected £226 from door-to-door collections and an outdoor disco - "one of many wonderful examples of people doing their bit to help the area recover," says Mr. Sheard.

The appeal covers the area of the Craven Archdeaconry, which spreads from Sedbergh in the north to Denholme, south of Keighley, and west into the Trough of Bowland.

Although the survey is far from complete, here are some of its findings with estimates of the income lost compared to previous year's figures:
