No new cases; the long wait begins

THERE were no new cases reported in the North Craven area overnight - a cause of great relief for farmers and local businesses. But livestock movement restrictions were re-imposed by MAFF in the Settle and Clitheroe districts.

Now, the long wait begins. Has the local outbreak peaked? is the question on everyone's minds as local pubs, hotels and tourist attractions face another Bank Holiday weekend with, it is forecast, more good weather.

As we have reported before, many vets believe that hot weather may help combat the disease which, like human 'flu, thrives in cold, damp conditions.

An area spokesman for MAFF in Leeds commented: "We are aware of this hot-weather theory although, as far as I know, it has not been scientifically proved. However, let's hope it's true and will help bring the Settle outbreaks to a speedy conclusion."
