AS we reported in our Stop Press on the Home Page, the busy A65 trunk road will be closed between Skipton and Gargrave until 6pm today as Government vets and troops clear a huge backlog of culled animals.

The road was also closed yesterday, when it was hoped to complete the operation, but North Yorkshire police said today that so many carcasses had to be moved that today's closure was necessary. "It is pretty horrendous out there," said one police officer.

However, no new cases were reported in the Settle area yesterday. There was one new North Yorkshire case at East Harsley, Northallerton.
