THERE was another confirmed case of foot and mouth in the so-called Settle-Skipton-Clitheroe "rectangle" yesterday, at Hollin Hall, Rathmell, near Settle. The total number of cases in Yorkshire now stands at 113.
Today would have been the final day of the Great Yorkshire Show had it gone ahead. Organisers cancelled 6 weeks before the event was to take place due to the continuing outbreaks in the Northallerton and Settle areas. Around 120,000 visitors would have attended the three-day event at the famous showground.
Judy Thompson, spokesperson for the organisers, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, said
"Based on previous years' figures and the money we have already had to spend in preparation for the show, the cancellation has cost us about £750,000."
Meanwhile, culls are due to take place today and/or tomorrow in the Hebden region following Tuesdays outbreak at Burnsall.
