Heartache goes on in Dales; free Lakes parking

HEARTACHE returned to the Dales overnight with two news cases confirmed, one in Burnsall and the second in the Aire Valley at Silsden.

More than 400 cattle and sheep were slaughtered at Rams Close Farm, Burnsall, a village which has already suffered massive culls and where local people had hoped that the worst was over.

Eighty-nine cattle and two lambs will also be killed at Heights Farm, Silsden, as the disease penetrates the Aire Valley. There was also a new case near Whitby, North Yorks, and one in Cumbria.
  • In the Lake District, where dozens of community organisations have lost vital funds because of cancelled events, the national park has come up with a novel idea to recompense them.
The park authority will waive its parking charges for one day at its 12 pay and display car parks and allow voluntary organisations to collect any parking fees. That could be as much as £700 per day for busier car parks and the gesture will cost the national park some £3,000.
