FARMERS’ leaders have given a cautious welcome to the Government’s announcement of two major enquiries linked to the foot and mouth crisis.
A policy commission is being created to consider the future of British farming and the Royal Society has been asked to launch a scientific investigation into the "transmission, prevention and control" of the disease.
NFU president Ben Gill commented: "We need a meaningful debate of this kind to see how we can ensure British agriculture moves forward in a sustainable and competitive way.
"While the industry has struggled to achieve major success in the shadow of a five-year depression, the development of a competitive, sustainable and profitable farming industry is the only way forward."
Meanwhile, Britain’s national parks – including the Yorkshire Dales – have joined together to press the Government to set up a £6 million fund to help their residents overcome the financial and social consequences of foot and mouth.
