STOP PRESS: FMD results "negative"

THOUSANDS of North Yorkshire farmers and owners of small businesses breathed a huge sigh of relief today when it was announced that foot and mouth tests on two sheep on a farm at Hawnby, near Helmsley, had proved negative.

It had taken five days for DEFRA scientists to clear the suspected sheep, five days of intense anxiety in Yorkshire and throughout the rest of Britain. An NFU official said that a "huge cloud had been lifted."
