Yorkshire Dales Market Towns

A market town with a rich history Sedbergh nestles in the idyllic rolling hills and fells on the western fringes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and close to the eastern edge of the Lake District National Park.

Cobbled yards and narrow streets combined with many small, independently owned shops today make Sedbergh a magnet for visitors. A lively outdoor market takes place every Wednesday in the Joss Lane car park.

Heralding from the Old Norse words Set Berg meaning "flat-topped hill" Sedbergh sits on ancient trade routes at the confluence of four valleys.

Down the centuries the townsfolk have taken most of their income from the wool industry, with weaving and hand knitting providing employment. Farming in the lush valleys roundabout still retains its importance.

For those wanting to take in the scenery Sedbergh provides an excellent base for walking with its proximity to the Howgills, a range of fells that the Countryside Agency plans to have incorporated into the Lake District National Park. Magnificent views are assured from the 1550 feet summit of Winder, the closest hill.

For those who enjoy a more sedate pace Sedbergh is aiming to become England's Book Town with a collection of shops and businesses involved in the selling and production of books.
