Founded 1300 years ago and nestling on a slope leading to the River Ure Ripon is one of the smallest cities in England. With its medieval streets lined with small shops and tearooms and its Georgian market place the town was a Britain in Bloom award winner in 2003.

Ripon has an exceptionally long and rich history. As a place name it derives from Hrype after the tribal people that settled there. By the time of the Doomsday Book the name had become more recognisable as Ripun.

Market day is Thursday and here too tradition still looms large with the Bellman ringing his bell to signal the "official" start of trading. A Farmers Market takes place on the third Sunday of every month.

A central attraction is the beautiful Ripon Cathedral, which like the town itself has a long history. Worship has taken place here since St Wilfrid built one of England's first stone churches on the site in the 7th century.

A full calendar of events includes the Ripon International Festival in September when this magnificent city is alive with the sound of symphony, choral and chamber music.

There are number of superb historical museums in Ripon; the Courthouse Museum which featured in the TV series Heartbeat, the Prison Museum and the Workhouse Museum.

Fountains Abbey is close by, as are many other attractions and beauty spots, making Ripon an ideal base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
