Bentham: a traditional Yorkshire town

An old settlement, Bentham has its roots in Roman times and later in Saxon times too. It is thought that the town takes its name from the Anglo-Saxon words bent, meaning "rough grass", and heim, meaning "home".

Market day is Wednesday in Bentham and locals from roundabout flock to the town.

Bentham offers wonderful riverside walks along the banks of the Wenning and is close to the market towns of Ingleton, Settle and Kirkby Lonsdale.

The Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Penyghent are close by as is the Forest of Bowland, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Leeds-Morecambe railway runs through the town and the scenic Settle-Carlisle line is easily accessible.
