D-Day for Dales school

[Tuesday 31 January 2006]

The battle to save a Dales school will reach a head today, if as expected North Yorkshire County Councillors agree to a recommendation for its closure.

The tiny village of Langcliffe near Settle has had a primary school since the 1820's, and during its last Ofsted inspection in 2002 was described as "an effective school that provides a satisfactory standard of education".

In common with many other rural schools however, Langcliffe has had to struggle with dwindling pupil numbers, prompting education bosses at North Yorkshire County Council to recommend that the school closes at the end of the current academic year.

Up 40 supporters of the school were expected to attend the meeting in Northallerton today when Councillors will make a final decision.

There is a strong feeling in the local community that the school has been left in the lurch by education bosses. Chairman of the schools governor's, Ray Heaton said that he felt "let down" by officers from the council's education department and Skipton MP David Curry who said that closure was the realistic option.

Head teacher Gill Wilson, who manages a team of 3 staff, said; "The uncertainty has been very difficult, this process has been going on for a long time. I think it is a serious blow to the community, to the village".

Adding; "The school has got a very good relationship with the village and is at the heart of the community".

Libby Glover, who has been part of the Langcliffe community for nearly 40 years, said; "Langcliffe is a remarkable village and the school has been here for 180 years. It is so easy to destroy something but replacing it is not so easy. We would lose part of our heritage if it were to close".

A spokeswoman for North Yorkshire County Council said no comment would be made until after today's meeting.
