With most of the East Coast of England – and virtually the whole of Yorkshire – covered in deep snow this week, people are being urged to get out and about to enjoy this Winter Wonderland by visiting a local wood.

So long as people are well dressed in warm clothing and have good, waterproof footwear, few places are more beautiful in snow than woods – and there are no few than 14,000 open to the public according to the Woodland Trust charity.

There are almost 1,000 of these in the areas between the Great North Road with dissects central Yorkshire and the M6 motorway over the border in Lancashire to the west.

Many of these are easily accessible to prevent long car journeys in difficult conditions, including Skipton Woods around the town’s 11th Century castle and, eight miles away on the A59, the famous Strid Woods on the Duke of Devonshire’s Bolton Abbey estate.
