Police and schools warn of consequences of bad behaviour

[Tuesday 28 October 2008]

Police in the Hambleton district have teamed up with schools in the Bedale, Northallerton and Thirsk area to warn of the consequences of anti-social behaviour in the run-up to bonfire night.

Parents of secondary and primary school children have been sent a letter outlining the problems faced by communities during the so-called “mischief season”, and warning of the criminal charges their youngsters could face if they choose to engage in anti-social and criminal behaviour.

We are asking parents for their cooperation over the coming weeks, and that they know where their children are, who they are with and what they are doing.

Simon Wilson - Northallerton Safer Neighbourhood Team

Sergeant Simon Wilson of Northallerton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “In previous years there has been a problem in the area with young people throwing eggs and flour at people and property and the misuse of fireworks.

“Not only does ‘egging’ cause alarm and distress to residents, they also have the inconvenient and often difficult job of cleaning it off.

“It also amounts to criminal damage and you could find yourself arrested and facing criminal charges.

“The misuse of fireworks causes us even greater concern and poses a serious danger to both the youngsters and members of the public.

“While it is only a minority who behave in this manner, it causes a great deal of upset and spoils the quality of life for many local residents. Parents need to be aware that their offspring may face criminal charges if they continue to behave in this way.

“We are asking parents for their cooperation over the coming weeks, and that they know where their children are, who they are with and what they are doing. Otherwise, they may find themselves facing the full force of the law.”

The force will be deploying extra high-visibility patrols in the weeks leading up to Halloween and Bonfire Night and would urge anyone who has any concerns to contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 60 60 247. Dial 999 in an emergency or if your safety is threatened.
