NORTH Yorkshire Police Service, which has been the subject of much controversy in recent years, has received a massive boost in this year's performance ratings compiled by HM Inspectors of Constabulary.

Force fares well in
government inspection
It has climbed up the national league tables for efficiency to joint 11th from 23rd last year amongst the 42 forces in England and Wales. The West Yorkshire force has done even better, climbing from 24th to joint 4th, but another Yorkshire force, Humberside, is equal worst in the country along with Northamptonshire.
The North Yorkshire force achieved national notoriety four years ago by putting up its charges to local taxpayers by more than 70% and was in the news again last week when it was revealed that some £28,000 had been spent renovating the Chief Constable's private shower in the Northallerton HQ. On top of that, allegations recently surfaced that staff at the force's headquarters building in Newby Wiske regularly break the speed limit through the nearby village - allegations denied by a force spokesman.
There were also plans to amalgamate North Yorkshire with other Yorkshire forces, now dropped by the Government, so the new ratings will be an important boost to police morale in the county.
Jane Kenyon, Chairman of the county's Police Authority, said: "It is very pleasing to hear Her Majesty's Inspector acknowledge the progress being made by North Yorkshire Police. Across the full range of police activities, the service continues to improve, in line with the vision of the Authority.
"This is a testament to the many staff who have put an enormous effort in over recent years. It is particularly pleasing to note the Force's first 'Excellent' grading for training and development, given that our people are our most important asset."

I was surprised to hear the NYP force is improving since recent figures show that detection rates are down this year and well below its target of 40%.
Stokesley is awash with vile behaviour from yobs (dare you to use the term!) and sickness in the force (again?) means the town is not being policed as it should be. Are we the highest-paying/least-well-policed ratepayers in the country?
