TWO Yorkshire Dales villages used their communities' recent annual sports day and gala to celebrate connection to the Yorkshire Water sewerage network for the first time.
Stirton and Thorlby usually join together every summer for friendly competition ahead of an evening of entertainment under canvas.

Despite the atrocious weather, the marquee still went up and, even though the rain meant a last-minute change of venue, children were still able to take part in some traditional races.
But there was another special reason to celebrate in 2007; homeowners from both villages now have the option of connecting to the mains sewerage network for the first time following Yorkshire Water's £1.5m investment in new pipe work, pumping station and treatment plant.
"The work was inspired by the Environment Agency which was concerned that leaving things as they were could have had a detrimental impact in Stirton Beck in the long run," said capital communications advisor, John Bond.
"As a result, we've laid 1.3kms of new sewer which enables 52 properties to connect to the new pumping station and waste water treatment works if they wish - although homeowners still have the option of sticking with the existing septic tanks.
"There has been an element of disruption on local roads while we've been working in the area and we'd like to thank both villages for their patience.
"However, Yorkshire Water wanted to contribute to the cost of the gala as a gesture of appreciation, covering the cost of hiring a band for the evening's entertainment - and we hope everyone who came along enjoyed the event."
