CCTV images of potential witnesses
NORTH Yorkshire Police have renewed appeals following a fatal hit and run and believe one of the people pictured here may provide the vital piece of evidence they need to find the driver involved.
Around 9.35am on Monday 26 February 75-year-old Bill Hendry was crossing Stockwell Lane in Knaresborough. He was hit by a small car or van, which did not stop, and died in hospital the same day.
Detective Inspector Dave Horne, who heads the investigation, said: "We are following several leads in this investigation, but the key element we need now is a witness to the moment when a vehicle hit Mr Hendry."
Moments before the impact Mr Hendry bought a newspaper in the Stockwell Post Office. CCTV shows several customers in the busy shop at that time and just before.
Detectives have traced several of them, but there are still several more whom officers believe may have seen or heard something of the fatal collision;
They are the individuals on the attached CCTV stills. DI Horne said: "It may even be that someone coming out of the post office shop may have actually seen the impact, or seen that small vehicle driving off.
"If someone did see what happened but is holding back for some reason I would ask them to come forward now. A grieving family wants and deserves answers, an exhaustive police investigation is in progress, and - especially - justice must be served."
Officers are also extremely anxious to speak to the driver of a camel-coloured or mustard-coloured car that was in the area at the time.
"This person may well have key information and should call us immediately," said DI Horne
