Dark nights bring rural crime

[Wednesday 21 October 2009]

Farmers and landowners are being warned to take extra care of their property as the dark nights approach because of an anticipated surge in rural crime.

The changing of the clocks with the end of British Summer Time in ten days time usually brings with it an increase in thefts from farms of machines like quad bikes and horse riding tack from riding stables.

Yesterday, the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) issued a warning to its members to be on their guard because the recession and the unemployment it has adds to the threat of rising crime.

Douglas Chalmers, Director CLA North, said: “Each year we seem to experience an increase in crime in the countryside almost as soon as the clocks go back. This year, we have the continued spectre of the recession, and we believe this is could simply increase the threat

"Long dark nights, a lack of police presence in remote areas and often poor security measures provide a field day for criminals, with incidents ranging from fly-tipping on private land to thefts of machinery and vehicles. In some cases violence has been used.

"Our advice is to be prepared and be aware. Let's not wait for it to happen. Taking simple steps such as locking buildings, installing security lights, not leaving tools lying around or keys in vehicles can make your property less of a target.

“It’s very easy to forget that if we’re working on farms or in a rurally based business, we may be observed over a period of time. If our routines mean that buildings, vehicles or tools are being left unattended, they should be made secure. And it’s sad to have to say so, but not every unexpected or unfamiliar visitor may have honest intentions.

“Have a look around your premises now, and if you feel you would benefit from further help, contact the Crime Prevention Officer at your local police station.”
