Captain set to ramble for rescue volunteers

[Tuesday 20 June 2006]

ONE Dalesman and his trusty steed are all set to undertake a fundraising Rescue Ramble together this coming weekend following their appearance at the annual Broughton Game Show.

Joe and Captain - preparing for their "Rescue Ramble"

Joe Dodson and his 21 year old Clydesdale Shire-horse, Captain, are currently collecting sponsorship for their ten-mile ramble from the showground at Broughton Hall to their home at Strid Wood, between Bolton Abbey and Barden.

Joe, who works with the forestry department on the Bolton Abbey Estate in Southern Wharfedale, has chosen two charities to support that are close to his heart - the Upper-Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association and the Cave Rescue Organisation.

He told Daelnet: "I've seen the rescue teams in action a few times at Bolton Abbey so I can appreciate just what goes into running the services these volunteer organisations provide.

"I've already got sponsorship money paid or promised, and I'm hoping to collect more on the day."

It is their fifteenth appearance at the Game Show and the pair will once again entertain the crowds on Sunday (25th June) with a timber snigging display. It's old hat for Joe and Captain who arrived at Bolton Abbey together in 1991 to pull felled trees from the estate woods which are often inaccessible for tractors.

The Rescue Ramble will begin when Joe saddles up to leave the showground at around 3.30 pm and head for Skipton along the A59. They will ride through the town and head for Embsay, Eastby and then out over the moors towards home.

It is certainly hard to miss Captain who stands at over 17 hands - and Joe is asking for anyone who spots the pair along their route to say hello and perhaps drop a donation into Captain's saddlebag.

If you would like to sponsor the Rescue Ramble, contact us here at Daelnet - via news@daelnet.co.uk - and we will pass your details on to Joe.

  • Joe and Captain are well known locally, having appeared at Bolton Abbey village fete, Ilkley carnival and featured on ITV's 'Dales Diary'. There will be a further chance to catch a glimpse of Captain in his Sunday best - harness and show brasses - as part of Skipton Sheep Day on July 2nd.
