Members of a Northallerton group committed to ‘greener’ living are sowing the seeds for a future without oil.
They are exploring ways in which people will be able to feed themselves when the cost and supply of oil becomes uncertain.
And the Northallerton and Villages in Transition Group is hosting a special event to glean the views of residents of Northallerton and the surrounding villages. The day will also look at practical solutions to improve the quality of life for people in the area through the development of a sustainable, low-carbon lifestyle and economy.
“The event is being held in response to concerns that although oil is still being discovered new reserves will not be able to satisfy future demand causing an increase in the price of everyday goods such as food,” said Sally Anderson, Chair of the Northallerton and Villages Community Forum.
“There have also been concerns expressed about continuing oil dependency and the significant environmental costs as more efforts are made to extract lower quality oil resources.
“Our event will provide members of the local community with the opportunity to promote locally sourced food. They can share their knowledge, ask questions, talk to people who have expertise or skills in local food production and find out how they can get involved in helping the local community feed itself.”
The event takes place from 10am until 2pm at Northallerton Town Hall on Saturday January 30. Refreshments will be provided free of charge.
The Northallerton and Villages in Transition group is looking at practical ideas to enable the community to collectively work towards a greener environment. Spearheaded by the Northallerton and Villages Community Forum, the Transition Town group is looking to join the national Transition Towns movement which started in Kinsale in Ireland and Totnes in Devon and is now spreading to York, Kirkbymoorside and many more towns, villages and communities.
To book a place at the event or for more information contact Peter Cole, Hambleton District Council Community Link Officer, on 01609 767212.
