Black-headed Gull
North Yorkshire Police are appealing for information after a number of unconfirmed reports in the Craven area of black headed gulls being deliberately killed.
Although firm evidence has yet to be uncovered, investigations are underway by the Craven Wildlife Crime Officer, PC Vanessa Bateson.
PC Bateson said: “North Yorkshire Police takes wildlife crime extremely seriously and we will use the full power of the law to take action against those committing such offences.
“It is crucial that any information about illegal killing of wild species such as black headed gulls is passed onto the police or Crimestoppers as soon as possible.”
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to “kill, injure or take any wild bird … take damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while that nest is in use or being built”.
“Black headed gulls can only be killed under the conditions of a special licence which is issued by Natural England,” explained PC Bateson. “Without this licence it is a criminal offence that could result in a maximum fine of £5,000 or six months in prison.”
If anyone has information that could help the investigations, please contact PC 1014 Vanessa Bateson, the Craven Wildlife Crime Officer, on 0845 60 60 24 7 or e-mail vanessa.bateson@northyorkshire.pnn.police.uk.
Information can also be passed onto Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
