MAKE the most of the glorious sunshine with a picturesque stroll along the Leeds and Liverpool canal this summer - that is the message from British Waterways as the organisation responsible for the country's network of canals is encouraging local people to soak up the atmosphere and get in touch with the environment by taking a leisurely saunter alongside the canal and nearby rivers.

Research shows that over half the UK population lives within five miles of a canal or river, making a break from everyday hectic life possible for millions of people. According to the World Health Organisation, walking for 30 minutes every day helps in the prevention of heart disease.
With a waterway on the doorstep of many people, walking opportunities along the relatively flat paths alongside canals are endless, either as part of a circular route or from one place to another.
Laurence Morgan General Manager for British Waterways Yorkshire says: "Walking along towpaths is a healthy and enjoyable way to enjoy the summertime and watch the boats go slowly by.
"Our towpaths are easy to walk with their straight, flat nature appealing to a variety of walkers and they link to many more miles of footpaths. It's great for walkers to explore, appreciate and be educated through our waterways and surrounding countryside.
