email this page to a friendVILLAGERS across the Hambleton district of the Yorkshire Dales are all set to do their bit for the environment this Christmas as they volunteer in their droves to set up recycling points throughout the area.
So far residents in 38 villages have agreed to create compounds to collect festive trees - but there are many more expected to sign up before the New Year.
The trees are chipped and composted through the scheme operated by the District Council - saving hundreds being sent to already overfull landfill sites.
Parish Councils are simply asked to set aside a small area of land to take the trees for two weeks from December 31. A mobile shredder tours the villages from January 15 to reduce them to chips - and the site is then cleared by district council workers.
So far there are sites in car parks, fields, at village halls, pubs and recycling centres and a garden centre.
