£2m for new flood fighter teams

[Thursday 18 November 2010]

New flood fighting teams designed to combine the work of the emergency services and volunteers from charities like the Red Cross and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution have been granted £2 million for training programmes.

The grants were announced today (Nov 18) by the Defra Secretary Caroline Spelman after studies of recent flooding disasters like the ones which hit Cumbria last year showed a lack of coordination between various bodies fighting floods.

Said Mrs Spelman: “We have learnt from the floods we have experienced in recent years that the emergency response is most effective when public, private and voluntary groups work well together – and we saw this week in Cornwall how important it is for these groups to have well rehearsed plans in place.

“The money we’re announcing today will help local flood rescue teams – such as fire and rescue services, police and the RNLI – to buy extra equipment or training which will be used in a rescue situation when the need arises.”

Here in Yorkshire, grants have been awarded to the fire and rescue services in West Yorkshire and Humberside. Others will be made later.
