A rare opportunity for people to visit Richmondshire heritage venues not normally open to the public is on offer from 10 to 13 September.
The event, organised by Richmondshire District Council and the Civic Society, also sees other historical attractions that normally charge admission throwing their doors open for free and includes a series of tours in the company of experts.
A full programme of events is planned over the four days, including guided walks at Easby Abbey and an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of landscape artist Turner, seeing where he sat to create some of this best-known Richmond views.
There will also be guided tours of Richmond’s Georgian Theatre Royal and the Town Hall.
Richmondshire District Council tourism manager Kate Loughlin says: “This is the first time that this annual national initiative has been brought to this district. It’s a great opportunity to take a closer look at familiar buildings and places. We are fortunate to have some very interesting venues opening their doors for free and there is something for everyone.”
Cllr Jimmy Wilson-Petch, Richmondshire District Council spokesperson on prosperous communities, says: “We are delighted to support this series of events and would like to stress that this is aimed at local people as well as visitors. It’s an opportunity to find out more about the district’s wonderful heritage and I would urge everyone to come along. Next year we aim to build on this year’s green shoots to make it even better.”
On the Saturday and Sunday (12 and 13 September) a host of activities will take place for all the family at Temple Grounds. The Scouts will be using the event to celebrate their centenary with a number of special activities.
