Opposition to rail re-opening

[Tuesday 18 April 2006]

THE campaign to reopen one of the country's most scenic rail routes could be facing a stumbling block - in the form of local residents.

The Wensleydale Railway company already controls 22 miles of the route between Leeming Bar and Redmire, but the use of a further 17 miles of track-bed between Redmire and Garsdale on the Settle-Carlisle Line, rests on successful negotiation with around 50 landowners.

Some have already said they will oppose any move to reinstate the line - they range from business owners who fear the financial implications of relocation to one local couple who do not want to lose a number of shrubs and trees planted in their garden.
