Poems and stories capturing the wild beauty of a reservoir in the Yorkshire Dales National Park have been collected in a new book on sale on the internet.
Called Writing at the Reservoir, it contains work created by children and adults during special workshops organised by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and funded by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The workshops were run by creative writer Alice Maddicott as part of 60th anniversary celebrations of the passing of the Act that led to the creation of national parks and AONBs and involved community and schools groups from inside and outside the areas around the Yorkshire Water-owned Grimwith Reservoir near Hebden and Scar House Reservoir in the Nidderdale AONB.
The Authority’s Interpretation Officer, Karen Griffiths, said: “We wanted to create a lasting legacy of last year’s 60th anniversary celebrations with the help of people of all ages from around the national park.
“Alice led a week of creative writing workshops inspired by the amazing scenery at Grimwith and from them we have picked a cross-section of stories and poems that capture the essence of this atmospheric place.”
Information about how to buy a copy of the book, which costs £4.20 plus p&p, are on the YDNPA website at www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/writing-at-the-reservoir where you can also download a digital version for free and read a special poem written by Alice and commissioned by the YDNPA as part of the Grimwith project.
Taking part in the workshops were pupils from Christ Church C of E VC Primary School in Skipton, mums from Eastwood Primary School in Keighley, the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club, the Keighley Home Tutor Group, YDNPA staff and Dales Volunteers.
