NORTH Yorkshire Police are appealing for information to help return more than 70 items believed to have been stolen from churches and cemeteries over a number of years.
The items, which include a variety of crosses, goblets, urns, vases, candle holders and photographs, were seized during the execution of a search warrant on 25 February 2008 at a house in Long Preston, in the Craven District.
A 63-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of theft. He was released on police bail pending further enquiries.
PC Monika Nagy, of the Ingleton Safer Neighbourhoods Team, said: “Through this appeal I am hoping that people will recognise the items so they can be returned to the rightful place or owners.
“It is very possible that some could have been taken from churches or cemeteries in neighbouring districts, or maybe even from other parts of North Yorkshire. Looking at the size of the collection it is likely that some went missing several years ago.
“Any help or information will be gratefully received.”
