Tesco withdraws Harrogate plans - for now
A CONTROVERSIAL planning application from Tesco for a 107,630 sq ft store in Harrogate was withdrawn yesterday (14 November 2007) - but only temporarily according to the company.
Harrogate's planners had set aside 27 November for determination of this planning application for former gas works site off Ripon Road and Skipton Road.
Planning Officers have been in discussions with Tesco about the details of the planning application and it is understood that the company has taken on board some of their concerns regarding the current proposals.
The council fully expects Tesco to re-submit a planning application for this site.
The Planning Committee scheduled for 27 November will still go ahead as there are two other items of business - the Lidl application at Knaresborough and an application for a discount retail store at Oakbeck Park, Harrogate.
Tesco issued a statement saying: "This is a temporary measure. The reason we have withdrawn at this stage is that we want to get it right for Harrogate. There is a time limit for determining planning applications and the limit was reached before discussions were completed. We will now continue those and re-submit the application shortly. We remain committed to it and we know that many people in north Harrogate want this store."
