New European Union laws restricting the amount of nitrogen-based fertilisers and slurry farmers can spread on their land are threatening Britain’s daily pinta, says the Tenant Farmers’ Association.
To meet EU targets in Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) could cost the average dairy farmer between £50,000 and £60,000 and bring them no extra financial benefits, claims TFA vice chairman Stephen Wyrill.
He went on: “Whether delivered to the doorstep or purchased at the local shop or supermarket, the daily fresh pinta remains a firm favourite amongst British households.
“The fact too that British dairy farmers are using welfare friendly techniques and are responsible for managing tens of thousands of acres of beautiful countryside is already recognised by British consumers. My fear is that unless something is done soon we risk seeing this as a thing of the past”.
