Neolithic skeletons and ancient field systems will be among the topics discussed at a special conference being held in Grassington later this month.
Entitled the Prehistory of the Yorkshire Dales, the event on Saturday October 31 is being organised by People, Landscape And Cultural Environment of Yorkshire (PLACE), the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) and the Yorkshire Dales Landscape Research Trust.
Robert White, the YDNPA’s Senior Conservation Archaeologist, said the conference – being held in the Devonshire Institute (Town Hall) –and had been organised in addition to the Authority’s annual historic day school held in April.
“It is a must for anyone interested in local history and, unlike the April day school which looks at a wide range of aspects of the historic environment, this will concentrate on the prehistory in the Yorkshire Dales – life before the Romans,” he said.
“One of the main subjects will be the changing environment in the late and post-glacial periods.”
Other topics will include the early Neolithic skeletons found in Elbolton Cave in Wharfedale and an overview of the archaeology of the Yorkshire Dales.
The cost of the conference will be £10 per head, which includes tea/coffee. Lunch is not provided.
