[Thursday 14 September 2006]

A ground-breaking new film on the dangers of global warming hits the silver screen this week and places farmers firmly at the centre of solutions to climate change.

An inconvenient truth - but are farmers part of
the solution?

Al Gore's controversial documentary 'An Inconvenient Truth' follows his crusade to wake up the world to the threat of global warming.

He urges the public to pause rather than move from denial to despair and attempts to offer simple solutions to stop the potential meltdown facing future generations.

Gore - a cattle farmer's son - talks about solutions to climate change such as the growing of renewable energy crops and the storing of carbon in soils and vegetation which agriculture is well placed to deliver according to British farming leaders at the NFU.

NFU president Peter Kendall said: "For a long time I have believed farmers and growers are more than ready to meet the challenges of climate change by growing renewable energy.

"This is our chance to make a positive contribution to mitigating climate change and improving the environment. In the film Al Gore says: "this is our time to rise again to secure our future." I believe UK farmers are ready for a long-term vision to supply a sustainable and secure home-grown energy source."
