Dales council to oppose Post Office
closure plans
ONE Yorkshire Dales council has pledged to do everything it can to support the area’s rural communities in the wake of Post Office closure proposals.
Melva Steckles, Leader of Richmondshire District Council, said: “We will examine these proposals very carefully, and we will be working with our MP, North Yorkshire County Council, and other partner organisations throughout the consultation process. There are two Richmondshire Post Offices earmarked for closure, and another proposal that will impact Richmondshire residents.”
The two Richmondshire Post Offices proposed for closure are Waitwith and Richmond West. The Post Office at Croft is also proposed for closure - it technically falls within the Darlington Borough Council local authority area but is used by Richmondshire residents.
Councillor Steckles continued: “In addition to these proposed closures, we recognise that the rising cost of fuel and utility bills is having a really serious effect on our rural communities. As a Council, we will continue to do everything we can to make sure those communities remain vibrant and sustainable.
“However, we are pleased to see that Post Offices in the more rural areas of Richmondshire will be left intact – recognition of the vital role they play at the heart of our communities.”
