MOTORISTS using one of the Yorkshire Dales' busiest routes are being warned of delays ahead as work begins to increase safety and improve driving conditions.

Resurfacing work for A65
A six-week maintenance scheme on a one-mile section of the A65 through the village of Long Preston is aimed at improving safety and reducing noise along the notorious stretch of road.
The £272,000 project is being co-ordinated by the Highways Agency and work will begin today (Monday 11 September) and last until Sunday 22nd October.
The Agency says the work has been carefully planned to keep delays for road users to a minimum with the bulk of repairs being carried out off-peak between 9.30am and 3.30pm when traffic flows are lower.
As the road is used by an average of 8,900 vehicles a day road users are warned that delays will be inevitable, mainly because the rural nature of the road means there is no suitable diversion route.
The road is a two way single lane trunk road and while the work is carried out a 40 mph speed limit will be in place for the safety of road users and contractors.

Temporary traffic lights will also be in place during the work, and for some short periods road users will have to be escorted through the traffic lights in convoy at 10mph for safety reasons.
Highways Agency project sponsor Martyn Cox said: "These works to repair the A65 carriageway through Long Preston Village are necessary for safety reasons, but will ultimately reduce noise for local residents and improve the effectiveness of the road drainage.
"Every effort has been made to keep delays to a minimum for road users while ensuring the safety of contractors.
"Unfortunately because of the rural nature of this road, there is no alternative route that can be used, so road users are urged to take extra care and allow more time for their journey."
