A new initiative to give Richmondshire residents the chance to walk their way to health has been launched.
The ‘Richmond and Swale Walking for Health’ scheme already has 20 members signed up for weekly free guided walks around Richmond and Catterick Garrison.
Beginners walks – on reasonably flat land – last around 45 minutes with longer 90 minute sessions available for the more experienced.
“The scheme is aimed at people who need exercise to improve their health, recover from illness, loose weight or to help prevent illness,” said scheme co-ordinator, William Gedye.
“The walks are not hikes – they are steady strolls on easy terrain and give people a chance to enjoy the countryside and make new friends while improving their health. Many of the people who have already signed up say they are unsure about walking on their own and this scheme gives them the chance to get out and about.”
He said links with local GPs and hospitals have been made to encourage patients who would benefit to join the guided walks.
Walks start at 10.15am every Wednesday in Richmond and every Thursday from The Garrison. Evening walks and other venues are planned in the future.
The scheme is part of a national organisation organised by Natural England. Locally it is run by the Richmond Swale Valley Community Initiative with funding from Comic Relief and the Richmondshire Local Strategic Partnership.
Thanks to this sponsorship and the generosity of volunteer leaders there is no charge for joining the walks.
