In one of the most imaginative projects ever created for nature lovers, the Woodland Trust Charity has teamed up with the European Space Agency to allow people to watch spring arrive in Britain – from a viewpoint in outer space.
An orbiting satellite armed with colour-sensitive cameras can trace the “greening” of Britain my measuring the chlorophyll in plants as they burst into life in spring.
The cameras are aboard the European satellite ENVISAT and the experiment has been designed with the help of Infoterra and Southampton University. Scientists say that the images will be able to record events like bluebell woods flowering an even frogs spawning.
All this will be recorded on video so that people can watch the progress of spring into summer on a daily basis.
