Oak trees set to be planted in Boroughbridge

[Friday 06 March 2009]

TWELVE 20-foot high oak trees are being planted on a popular public footpath alongside the River Ure in Boroughbridge on the privately owned Aldborough Estate.

Pupils from Boroughbridge Primary School will join members of the Town Council, the Renaissance Town Team Yore Vision and Harrogate Borough Council to watch the planting.

We hope that children and residents will get enjoyment from watching these trees grow and mature for many generations to come

The route is one of six walking routes developed as the Ure Walks ‘Through Time’ project and the trees will eventually create the look and feel of an ancient hedgerow.

Keith Ramsay, Chair of Yore Vision added that they will be of immense value ecologically and visually.

“We know from what people have told us that the Ure Walks are proving very popular and four more are planned. A lot of negotiations have taken place about the purchase and location of these trees. We are very grateful to the owner of the land and tenant farmer as well as the Aldborough Estate Managers, Greenwood and Co. We are also grateful for the help and expertise we have had from the tree team at Harrogate Borough Council.”

The trees, which are between 12 and 15 years old, have been purchased from world-renowned tree growers Barcham of Ely in Cambridgeshire. The trees are planted in 250 litre grow bags.

Alan Gilleard, Harrogate’s Assistant Arboricultural Manager, says that this means once the bags are removed the Oak trees will quickly root down into the ground. He also says they have a 900 year life span. “It is quoted that Oak trees grow for 300 years, rest for 300 and take 300 to die. We hope that children and residents will get enjoyment from watching these trees grow and mature for many generations to come.”

The trees are being planted by Horticultural Contractors, Skeltons of High Birstwith. The £4,000 project has been funded through Yorkshire Forward’s Renaissance Market Town programme and is being supported by Harrogate Borough Council and Boroughbridge Town Council.
