SITTING along the banks of the River Eden, Kirkby Stephen can offer some of the best fishing in the area; and now, thanks to a Government grant, the town's younger anglers have being given a considerable boost.
The Environment Agency and Kirkby Stephen and District Angling Association have teamed up to help youngsters fish for free for the next three years.

With the help of a £1, 800 grant from the Agency, the Angling Association has agreed to provide free membership for under 18s until the end of the 2008/2009 season.
"We're keen to bring new anglers to the sport," said Environment Agency Fisheries and Recreation Officer Jo Ratcliffe.
"It's great to be working with the Kirkby Stephen Angling Association to make it easier for young people to get involved.
"Angling is a fantastic hobby for kids. It gets them out and about in the fresh air and encourages them to take an interest in their local environment. An Environment Agency survey last year on attitudes to angling showed that more and more children were taking up fishing, and that's something we want to build on."
Whilst the membership is free, parents are being reminded that children over 12 require a junior rod licence to fish in England and Wales.
