IT MAY still seem a long way off but one visitor attraction in the northern dales is preparing to celebrate to the magic of Christmas next month - and organisers are looking for help to do so from local residents.
The magical time of year is to be celebrated in a new exhibition at The World of James Herriot in Thirsk. Local people are being urged to help by sharing their festive treasures and traditions with the centre's visitors.
Each year the Thirsk based attraction is dressed 1940s style with paper garlands, greenery and a Christmas tree - just as it would have been during rationing times; and the kitchen table is always bursting with Christmas favourites such as puddings, cakes and mince pies.
I would also love to hear from people about their own special Christmas traditions - from the build up to the big day itself. Ration recipes, make do and mend gifts, a family carol or a favourite tipple...

For 2006, the new exhibition area will be dedicated to 'Christmas Treasures and Traditions' to explore familiar festive items and traditions and find out more about the history behind the season; including everything from why stockings are hung up and sixpences are put in puddings to why greenery is hung, crackers pulled and cards sent.
Exhibition co-ordinator, Irene McNulty, wants to include local treasures in the exhibition.
"As ever we need the help of local people to loan us any decorations that have survived from the 1940s, 50s and 60s," she said.
"Most homes have a box of retired decorations - they are no longer displayed but not disposed of because they bring back fond memories of Christmas' past.
"I would also love to hear from people about their own special Christmas traditions - from the build up to the big day itself. Ration recipes, make do and mend gifts, a family carol or a favourite tipple - I want to hear about them all!"
The exhibition opens on November 3 and will run until January 26.
