North Yorkshire Police have been praised for reaching out to Nepalese and Fijian families who are based at Catterick Garrison.

Catterick Garrison is the largest British Army garrison in the world and home to around 12,000 people, plus a large temporary population of soldiers including the Gurkha recruits from Nepal.

There are currently 140 Nepalese families, 40 of whom have decided to settle permanently within North Yorkshire after leaving the armed forces. There are also 40 Fijian families with this number set to rise by the end of August 2008.

In total, there are also more than 100 Nepalese and 16 Fijian children learning in schools around the Richmondshire area.

This is a great way for North Yorkshire Police to engage with our local communities, especially those people who have settled here from
overseas

Sean Godfrey - North Yorkshire Police

North Yorkshire Police is committed to communicating with ALL of our communities, and one such way is via the Local Policing Summaries which have been translated into Fijian and Nepalese.

PC Sean Godfrey, who is the Safer Neighbourhoods Officer for Catterick Garrison, said: “The batch of the summaries have been translated and hand delivered to the Nepalese and Fijian families.

“This is a great way for North Yorkshire Police to engage with our local communities, especially those people who have settled here from overseas.”

PC Godfrey said the feedback on the translated summaries has been really good. He said the Nepalese and Fijian people were impressed that the force has made such a conscious effort to welcome and embrace them by using their own language.

The Local Policing Summaries are used to introduce the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team, give an overview of how local police initiatives and projects have impacted on the area and how residents can get involved in helping to make their neighbourhood a safer place to live.
