Competitors challenged to great cancer relay

[Monday 03 August 2009]

Anti-cancer campaigners are seeking competitors and sponsors wanting to take part in the world’s biggest fund raising event. It is open to anyone – particularly people who have survived cancer – who can run, walk, skip or even crawl round a short course in Skipton’s Aireville Park.

We want to celebrate life and pay tribute to those who have been touched by
cancer

Cara Taylor - Cancer Research UK's Relay for Life

Relay for Life, the world’s biggest charity event with races taking place in many different countries, was inspired 20 years ago when Dr Gordon Klatt ran and walked around a track for 24 hours to raise funds for the American Cancer Society in honour of his cancer patients.

Obviously, very few people – and, in particular, cancer sufferers – can rise to such a challenge so relay teams are organised to do what they can. All proceeds raised go towards cancer research here in the UK.

The Craven event will start from Aireville School, Skipton, on Saturday, September 12, and the organisers are seeking more teams and sponsors from local businesses. The relay will also be accompanied by fun events in the park like giant inflatable games, line dancing, bingo, karaoke and a range of beauty treatment stalls.

Cara Taylor, Co Chair of Cancer Research UK's Relay for Life in Skipton, says: "Relay for Life is the world’s largest fundraising event that’s taking place on your doorstep. We want to celebrate life and pay tribute to those who have been touched by cancer, but just as equally to remember loved ones who have passed away.

“There are many different strands to Relay for Life and anyone who can help out in any way is urged to get in touch. We are still particularly keen to hear from any work colleagues or groups of friends wanting to form a team and take part and cancer survivors who would like to join the special Lap of Honour.”

  • Anyone who would like to find out more about Cancer Research UK’s Relay for Life in Skipton is urged to contact Cara Taylor or Katherine Wass at relayforlifeskipton@fsmail.net or leave a message at 07791 470877.
