First steps in conservation

[Thursday 3 June 2010]

It’s never too early to learn about conservation and caring for the environment. North Craven Children's Centre is celebrating National Family Week by running a series of conservation workshops for the under fives. Children's centre staff members are joining with the RSPB, The National Trust and the Malham Falconry Centre to hold a day of activities this Saturday (June 5th), giving children the chance to make a bird box or a butterfly feeder, plant a sunflower or complete a nature trail with their families.

North Craven Children's Centre in Hellifield, has recently completed work to enhance an outdoor area and has taken the opportunity to mark National Family Week with outdoor and conservation activities, teaching children how they can take small steps – such as feeding the birds, composting waste and recycling – to contribute to the environment.

Families are being encouraged to bring a picnic and make a whole morning of it. National Family Week is the UK's biggest annual celebration of family life aiming to highlight the importance of quality time together and promote the benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle.

The North Craven workshops and activities will take place at the children's centre between 10.30 and 2pm and will also tie in with the launch of the BBC's Springwatch programme with the RSPB, when people across the country are asked to report on and record a whole variety of wildlife activity.

County Councillor Jim Clark, North Yorkshire's Executive Member for Schools said: "We are delighted that these new outdoor facilities are being put to such good use immediately. Our children's centres are a wonderful resource for our families and help to give children the best possible start in life. In this way we also ensure the sustainability of our communities."
