Doug checks out his route with his trusty 2CV
A YORKSHIRE DALES man is set to undertake a charity fundraiser with a difference next month as he drives to the Arctic Circle to raise money for a children's cancer charity.
Doug Redsell, from Richmond, is undertaking the solo 3000 mile journey through Norway in his 1978 Citroen 2CV in aid of the Candlelighters Trust, following the death of his 11 year old grandson earlier this year.
"The Trust was fantastically supportive to our family during David's treatment for rhabdo myo sarcoma, a rare form of muscle cancer," said 73 year old Mr Redsell, who leaves Richmond on 11 September.
"In fact, they are still helping my son and daughter in law come to terms with what has happened. I knew I wanted to do something to raise awareness of the work the Candlelighters do, and raise some money for them to carry on helping families in Yorkshire. Driving 400 miles beyond the Arctic Circle and back in 11 days seemed like a good challenge!"
Doug will be completely self sufficient for much of his journey; eating and sleeping in the car. Norwegian friends made during 30 years as a member of the worldwide 2CV organisation will offer the occasional hot shower at strategic points along the way.
As he makes his preparations for the journey, neighbours are collecting sponsorship, and working with local businesses on a variety of fundraising projects. Raffle prizes already donated include a two night cruise, from Newcastle to Amsterdam, including sightseeing tour.
Candlelighters is based at St James University Hospital in Leeds; the regional centre for youngsters with cancer or leukaemia. Any local child diagnosed with the illness in Yorkshire will be treated at Jimmy's. The Trust is there to help them and their families, with support groups, travel grants, respite care, funding for staff, play equipment and activities. They also finance research projects on childhood and adolescent cancer at York and Leeds Universities.
Doug will be given an official send off on his epic journey by Richmond Mayor, Councillor John Robinson. A reception in Richmond's Norwegian twin town of Vinstra is also planned.
Anyone who would like to support Doug's charity efforts with sponsorship, raffle donations or fundraising ideas - a fundraising coffee morning venue is currently needed - should contact Fiona Hall on 07796 777916, or James Hall on 07967465634.
