Fun day ahead for pupils at Malham
SCHOOL children from town and country will be meeting up on Tuesday (May 5) for a day of fun at the spectacular Malham Cove in the Yorkshire Dales.
About 28 youngsters from Kirkby Malham Primary and from Eastwood Primary in Keighley will be getting together to undergo the introductory ‘Discovery’ level of an award scheme run by the John Muir Trust – a UK charity dedicated to the protection of wild land for both nature and people.
Catherine Kemp, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) Outreach Officer, and Cat Kilner, the Authority’s Area Ranger for Malhamdale and Lower Ribblesdale, will be there to make sure the pupils have everything they need.
Catherine said: “They will be taking part in some practical conservation work like tree planting and they will be finding out more about the area, particularly about some of the smaller animals that live there.
“We are quite keen to start using the John Muir Award to increase people’s understanding of the National Park and also to provide us with a formal focus and structure for the work we do with groups.”
On May 19, the youngsters will be at the school to build their entry for the annual Malham Safari Trail, which runs from May 23 to May 31 and sees the area invaded by zoo ‘animals’ of all shapes and sizes.
