A new ratings system for food businesses will be launched in the dales district of Hambleton this spring.
The scheme will help consumers choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving stars to businesses – five stars for the best and no stars for the worst.
Information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, pubs, cafes, takeaways and hotels will be available. Supermarkets and other food shops are also included in the scheme.
District Councillors have agreed to introduce the Food Standard Agency’s food hygiene rating scheme after hearing from local businesses and consumers. A survey of food businesses showed 84% were in favour of its introduction and the majority of the consumers that responded said that the ratings system would influence where they bought their food.
“This scheme will allow consumers to make informed choices about where they eat – or buy – food and therefore encourage businesses to improve their hygiene standard,” said Cabinet Member, Councillor Brian Phillips.
“All premises inspected by environmental health officers on a regular basis – restaurants, takeaways, cafes, sandwich shops, pubs, hotels, supermarkets – will be given a star rating. Good hygiene will be good for business – and any improvements needed to get a higher rating will be no more than is already required by law.”
He said the national scheme aims to reduce food borne illnesses and ensure consistency for businesses and clarity for consumers across the country.
Businesses will be given their initial rating this spring – when more information will be available on www.hambleton.gov.uk
