Want hands-on experience in a real hospital?

[Thursday 02 February 2006]

Airedale Hospital is offering local youngsters the opportunity to gain hands on experience in the fast paced environment of the Trusts' base at Steeton, near Keighley.

Airedale NHS Trust - which serves communities throughout the southern Yorkshire Dales - runs a 2 year on the job programme for students interested in a career in health or administration.

Up to 30 students are accepted every year enabling them to move into challenging and interesting careers.

Grace Throup, a 17 year old from Draughton, near Skipton, is one of those benefiting from the scheme. Grace is a former pupil of Ilkley Grammar School and is now in her second year as a vocational trainee at Airedale.

The teenager has already spent time working on the wards and in January this year started work alongside the surgeons and nurses in Airedale's operating theatres where she is getting the chance to gain hands on experience of assisting in a real life-saving environment.

Grace has gained a place on a nursing course at Manchester University later this year, and says; "I knew I wanted a career as a nurse but also needed real work experience before I go to University".

Adding; "It is so varied and so interesting. With the nurses I get to talk to patients and try and help reassure them before their procedures. During operations I assist the nursing team who support the surgeons by opening the sterile packs of swabs or instruments and being part of a real team".

The training is specifically aimed at those in the 16 to 18 age group who have decided to pursue a career in health care, giving them that all important hospital experience that simply cannot be gained through a classroom environment.

For those taking part the course offers work experience, college day release, pay or allowance, qualifications that are equivalent to A levels and job sampling to help the students decide which career they want to pursue.

The scheme is now in its fourteenth year and can boast some considerable achievements, with;

  • A 100% success rate of achieving qualifications among those who stay on to the end of the course
  • A very low drop out rate compared to the national average
  • A large number of those who undertake the course still working in the NHS

The Trusts' Vocational Training Department is holding an information evening for anyone interested in joining the programme on Wednesday 8th February at 7pm in the Lecture Theatre at Airedale General Hospital.
