THOUSANDS of schoolchildren from the Yorkshire Dales towns of Harrogate and Skipton have been learning important health and safety lessons recently thanks to North Yorkshire Police’s ‘Crucial Crew’ road shows.
The annual Crucial Crew events saw over 2000 Harrogate district children and around 700 Skipton district kids attending.
Organised by North Yorkshire Police and a team of volunteers, the Crucial Crew events bring together different partner agencies to provide practical teaching on a range of issues. Local schools attend for either a morning or an afternoon session, broken down into 10x10-minute practical sessions which comprise the following:
- Safety around electrical installations
- Underage drinking and anti-social behaviour
- River Safety
- Road Safety
- Drugs and safety with medicines
- Farm Safety
- Fire Safety
- Bus and Coach Safety/Anti-Social Behaviour
- First Aid, calling 999, Criminal Damage and Stranger Danger
- Shoplifting and Consequences of a Criminal Record
The sessions are run by partners which include NEDL, Harrogate Borough Council, North Yorkshire County Council, the Ministry of Defence Police, the Health and Safety Executive, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue, St John’s Ambulance, Asda, Northern Rail, Jarvis, British Transport Police, Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Craven Organisation for Drugs and Alcohol, Safer Craven Community Partnership, Primary Care Trust, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Group and Social Services.
Sgt Geoff Crocker, Community Safety Sergeant for Western Area, said: “Reducing crime and saving lives is our core policing purpose and there’s no better method of doing this than through educating young people. The Crucial Crew events are an excellent way of getting important safety messages across in a way that really makes an impact.
“Our aim is to make sure every schoolchild across Harrogate and Skipton leaves these road shows having had both a positive experience of North Yorkshire Police and our partners, and with safety advice which will stay with them for life.”
