Christopher Awdry and Thomas the Tank Engine will be at Leeming Bar station and Bedale this week-end, October 29 and 30, to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of publication of the first Thomas story.
In 1945, Rev. W.Awdry wrote down the bedtime story he had told his small son Christopher and published it as a book. Since then, generations of parents and children have enjoyed reading the stories about Thomas together.
On Saturday and Sunday (Oct 29 and 30) Thomas will be puffing up and down, mainly between Leeming Bar and Bedale stations where his fans can see him, admire him and photograph him. To avoid queues on Saturday and Sunday, families can pre-book timed rides on Thomas by phoning 08454 50 54 74.
Two vintage buses will provide FREE 'park and ride' journeys to the station throughout the week-end. The P+ R will operate from the large free parking area beside McDonalds, just beside the A1 Northbound at Leeming Bar.
Sir Topham Hatt, the Fat Controller, is expected to be present throughout the week-end to issue Certificates of Travel to young passengers on their Day Out With Thomas. There will be lots of other fun things to do as well: face painting and fairground music, clowns, balloons, story-telling by Christopher Awdry - and, of course, the birthday cake with 60 candles.
Special refreshments will be provided for Thomas by Yorkshire Water, whose tanker will be on site throughout the week-end.
Pre-booked Day Out With Thomas tickets are also valid for free same-day travel on regular Wensleydale Railway services to Leeming Bar from Redmire, Leyburn, Finghall and Bedale stations - please check train times when booking for Day Out With Thomas or see the website www.wensleydalerailway.com.
The little blue tank engine and his friends have become world famous and Christopher has become a railway author himself. He has even written two books about the Wensleydale Railway, The Chips Express and Heave-Ho Hamish. Both books are available in the restored shop coach at Leeming Bar station.
