Shadow over green belt anniversary

Wednesday 25 May 2005

THE green belt designed to preserve space between ever-expanding towns and villages is celebrating its 50th anniversary under the most sustained attack in its history, according to one of Britain's best respected countryside protection groups.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) claims in a report published today (Wednesday) that the worst offender slashing away at greenbelt land is the Government itself which has launched a "major onslaught" to undermine on of the key instruments of planning policy.

The irony is that the greenbelt idea was implemented by a post-war Labour government and is, according to the CPRE, "on of the sharpest tools in the planning toolkit."

Campaign chief executive Shaun Spiers says Government policies imposed from the top down are eroding public confidence and encouraging land speculation, causing major new threats to the countryside.
