EU regional grants facing cuts

Wednesday 16 November 2005

THE environment in some of Britain's wildest places - including areas of North Yorkshire - could be under threat from proposed cuts in regional development funds from the European Union, a Government minister will be told today.

Because of the accession of ten new countries to the union last year, it has been agreed that grants to the wealthier members will be re-structured from 2007 - and conservationists fear the axe could fall on some of Britain's environmental improvement schemes.

Industry Minister Alun Michael is due to meet officials from leading conservation bodies - including the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Groundwork - to discuss regional grants after 2007.

They will ask that when and if cuts are imposed, interested non-government-organisations are consulted to help preserve environmental work in the poorer regions of the UK.
