Lake District wardens saved

Wednesday 05 January 2005

PLANS to axe some 100 voluntary wardens who lead people on walks in the Lake District have been shelved in a row which has led to the national park authority being accused of political correctness.

Plans to axe the service were revealed earlier this week because, it was said, the walks attracted "too many middle aged white people." Instead, officials wanted to launch a campaign to attract more young people from ethnic majorities.

This would have attracted larger cash grants from the Government but, on Monday, a committee meeting of authority members over-ruled the plan amid huge protests from local business people who accused officials of being "obsessed by political correctness."
